Caliph Rafīq Ahmad, who is one of the active dervishes, contacted me to say that he was bringing two Muslim men who wanted to take the pledge. I waited for them in the house of caliph ʿAbd al-Bashīr, where I live on the upper floor. Suddenly, while I was sitting, ḥaḍrat Shaikh Muḥammad al-Kasnazan let me see that one of the two men was filthy. I stood up and said loudly: “Rafīq Ahmad, this man is filthy, so why do you bring him to me? Take him away from me.” I then sat down. This was witnessed by caliph ʿAbd al-Bashīr and caliph Jaʿfar.

When caliph Rafīq arrived, there was only one man, called Muḥammad Naṣīr, with him. I asked my two companions to ask him about the other person. Rafīq replied:

As we were about to get into the rickshaw, the other person suddenly said: “I am filthy, I am filthy. I cannot go with you in case the Shaikh (meaning me) will expose me.”

Caliph Jaʿfar was shaken by what he had just heard and said: “The caliph, the deputy of the Shaikh, stood up about one hour ago and said loudly: ‘Rafīq Ahmad, this man is filthy, so why do you bring him to me?’” The man who came with Rafīq was astonished and said: “I had doubts about the story of our master ʿUmar with Sāriya,[1] but I believe it now. I will take the pledge from this man.” He kissed my hand and foot and took the pledge.

Footnote

[1] Sāriya was the leader of a Muslim army. One day he was in battle in Persia when his army was in the process of being surrounded by the enemy. At the same time, caliph ʿUmar bin al-Khaṭṭāb was delivering the sermon of the Friday prayer in Medina. He suddenly interrupted his sermon to shout: “Sāriya take to the mountain, take to the mountain!” He did not know why he said that. When Sāriya came back from battle he told people that when his army was being surrounded, he heard a voice saying: “Sāriya take to the mountain, take to the mountain!” He and his soldiers moved to the foot of the mountain and used it to protect the back of the army. This manoeuvre did indeed help them defeat the enemies.
